New Milestone With The Walker PDF Print E-mail

Since the new year began my weekly therapy and strengthening sessions consist of one physical therapy session, one trainer led swimming session and one self-guided swimming session. We continue to take physical therapy at Orthopaedic Physical Therapists and Associates working primarily with Jeff Schafer. For aquatic therapy we use The Drake Center's pool . My trainer, Lisa Newport, is a jewel and challenges me in every way just as physical therapy does.

We typically have physical therapy on Mondays, my trainer led aquatic therapy on Wednesdays and on Saturdays my wife and I go to the pool to work on our own.

In physical therapy we usually work on sit to stands, leg strengthening with a "total gym" and walking with the walker. Yesterday, January 29th, 2007 the incline of the total gym was increased forcing me to push more weight with my legs. We finished the session with the walker and I set a new personal best by walking 34 feet in one attempt. On the second walk I finished the 50 ft. walk to the front desk with energy to spare. Perhaps not much, but I still could have gone further.

Each of these things represent another evolutionary improvement in strength and endurance. My recovery from the spinal stroke is slow. Yet, there has not been a time during the last 13 months when I could not look back 1 month and recognize that progress has been made in that time. We continue to trust God for his healing and strength. He has been faithful to provide increases in strength and a wonderful support system through friends at our church and my employment . Not only am I a recipient of this blessing but also my wife. Trudy performs what seems to me, superhuman feats, daily in my care. Twenty-seven years ago we mouthed the words, "in sickness and health, for better or worse" but neither realized what that might mean.

Doctors told me a year ago that I would achieve 95% of whatever recovery I would make by the end of 24 months. There is still nearly 11 months left in that time frame. We look forward to the journey as well as the end result, whatever that may be and praise God for his care over my physical improvement, but more importantly, His saving grace and spiritual nourishment.
