Best/Worse

Ok,……I just spent 12 hours in the car going to North Dakota.  As you will be able to tell, I spent a little too much time thinking about this stuff, but at least I survived the trip.

Worst

Worst Parade:  1967 American Legion National Convention – Boston, MA,  Very LoOoOong, with many BIG hills.

Worst Meal – Saddle Rock Café, Casper (or was it Cheyenne), WY – early ‘70s  Green Eggs and Ham, I am, I am.

Worst Facilities:  Armory, Albany, NY 1967 (?)

Worst Bus:  McAtees, Claflin, KS

Worst place for a 3rd soprano to be stranded with Sandra for an extended period:  Fair grounds, Lake Geneva, WI, 1967 – (Sandra, you know I love you.)

Closest to a street fight:  Early 70’s March of Champions - Rifle squad plays chicken with the Anaheim Kingsmen drum line (in front of GBHS).  Farm kids part the blue sea……

Total lack of judgment: Early 70’s, a handful of locals make fun of the Kilties’ skirts at the March of Champions massing of the corps.

Best

Best Parade(s):  The night parades; 1970 VFW National Convention – Miami, and the U.S. Open parades, Marion, Ohio, late 60s, early 70’s

Best Baritone Solo in a Rehearsal:  James (Jimmy Jumbo Tone) Launchbaugh – Whitewater, WI – 1973 DCI World Championships WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE FIND LUNCH?

Best Exhibition – 1973 Arrowhead Stadium - 80,000+ standing ovation (at a football game?)

Best Facilities – U of Houston, 1971

Show that you’d most like to see again:  1968 VFW National Championship Show, Detroit, MI. -  KILTIES win! (Ken Norman, I know you are out there.  You guys were great!)  Royal Airs meltdown in closer.

Best Cement Slab:  KIMBO

Best Trip:   1971 East Coast Tour (World Open, Danny Thomas Invitational) – Eight men and a banana in a car.

Best Photograph in an urban setting:  Jack Whitis, 1972 Olde Towne, Chicago.  (Sorry, Jack…..that’s piling on)

Best Rifle Salute:  Greg Weese – 1973 (or 1974), …..pssshhsssssss.  Lights Out!

Best Vehicle:  Bruce McWilliam’s Jeep Wagoneer, manikins included.

OK, OK,…enough!  You guys still have 3 days to get your orders in.

Jeff
